Most homeowners have that one room. You know what we mean. One that’s either too small or too stuffy to do anything meaningful with. Maybe it’s full of furniture, or odds and ends you don’t know what to do with. Whatever the case may be, you’re beginning to give up hope.

But with the holidays right around the corner, it’s time to think outside of the box. Where will all these people go if you decide to have a party? Turns out, all it takes is a couple of tweaks, and that one room can become a dynamic social space. Let’s look at a few tips and trick to opening up your home.

Rearrange your room.

It’s time to take your tetris skills to the next level! Sometimes all you need is a little reformatting to free up space. Push the couch against the wall and rotate the coffee table. If all else fails, your best bet may be to move all that clunky stuff into the garage, storage room, or other empty area for the night.

Get cleaning.

A little elbow grease can go a long way! If that one small room seems stuffy, go in and get rid of all the gunk. It’s amazing what a deep clean can do when you’re trying to free up valuable floor space. While you’re at it, if there are any unessential items out and about, stow those in other areas where no one can see them.

Keep decorations to a minimum.

It may be a holiday party, but that doesn’t mean you need to go all out on the decorations. If you do, you’ll end up regretting it, as it will waste valuable room to move around in. A large set piece will only suffocate a small space, so try and settle on a few smaller items such as candles, card holders, or miniature ornaments.

Get rid of any unwanted furniture.

Any time you decide to throw a party, it’s a great opportunity to part ways with certain pieces of furniture. We tend to hold onto stuff longer than we should, so if you’re having issues with area, it could be time to purge. Get rid of any extra dust collectors you don’t need any more!

Create a coatroom.

Ask that everyone at the party drop off their coats, bags and accessories in one room which you’ve put aside as storage space. This can be a bedroom or other area that won’t be needed come party time. This way, you’ll make sure everyone is slimmed down, and not taking up any extra space.

Creating a social space in your home is all about thinking about things differently. Sure, some rooms will always be too small, but it’s amazing what you can do with just a few tweaks. Follow these tips and tricks and your holiday party will be the talk of the town.
